My Rock - Brief Essay
Please write a short essay on this theme:
“If you were an igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary rock, what rock would you choose to be?â€
- Why do you want to be this kind of rock?
- What type of rock are you, and how were you formed?
- What do you look like, and what qualities do you have?
- For example, are you black, red, multi-color, shiny, flaky, hard, dense, light colored, light-weight or floating?
- Where and how were you formed?
- How are you used commercially? What qualities make you good for this use?
Steps to Follow
- Choose your rock.
- Do some research so you can answer the questions.
- Write up a draft of your response.
- Have fun with this – you can get dramatic and use your sense of humor.
- Trade draft essays with a classmate and evaluate them using the rubric.
- Then revise as needed.
- Make your essay "Fine" or "Stellar"

If I were a rock I would be granite because it is so beautiful! Also, I used to live in Maine and loved to look at granite when I played outside. I'd collect little granite rocks. My sisters and I climbed around on the granite boulders, especially at Sebago Lake.
As a granite rock I was formed underground, under a volcano. There was lots of heat and pressure - man, it was tougher than exam time down there! That's why I'm so hard headed.
What do I look like? Well, I contain all these different colors from black to silver - very dramatic - with gray in the background.
My black spots are shiny. My gray parts are sort of dull - we can't all be stars, eh? And my mica spots are the best. My mica spots are shiny and silver and are made up of thin layers. You can peel off a sliver of silver if it's big enough.
Ah yes, I am used commercially. You'd think they'd leave us beauties out where we belong - in the woods. But upscale kitchen designers have decided to take slabs of granite boulders and polish them up for fancy counter tops. Because I'm so hard and dense, I am very durable. Because I'm multi-colored I don't show dirt! And I'm just plain gorgeous.

If I were a rock, I would be the extrusive igneous rock, Obsidian because it is so unique! This rock is so pretty with its shiny black appearance. It is different compared to all of the other igneous rocks. All Obsidian is hard and shiny like glass. Its color always consists of black, but there are also “snowflake” and “rainbow” varieties that have back with either white spots or a rainbow like sheen. Obsidian is formed from lava shooting out of volcanoes. The reason you can’t see the crystals in it is because it cools VERY quickly. The crystals do not have time to come together and form. Because of its appearance, it is used commercially for jewelry and other decorative means. Another very interesting and current use of Obsidian is blades for surgical scalpels. These blades have been used in cardiac surgery because the edge of an Obsidian blade is very sharp and precise.

Way cool on the obsidian, Jeanna! I love the shiny black too. Cardiac surgery, really?!

My favorite type of rock that I would like to be is the Sedimentary rock. What I like about myself is that I’m composed of so many different layers. People always enjoy looking at me and finding different fossils inside of me. I especially like it when people pick me up and see old seashells. I don’t like being called a Dirt rock, but oh well. I especially liked being used to make chalk, but now that so many classrooms have whiteboards, I guess I’m not needed as much there. People always comment on how beautiful I look in rock formations. A lot of times I have a reddish tint because I have Sandstone in me but I also have limestone. If you want to see how beautiful I am, why don’t you come on over and see me at the Grand Canyon in Arizona.

Melinda,
I have to admit I do enjoy those granite countertops. Mom has one and it is so easy to cut my peanut butter and jelly sandwhich on the granite countertop. Since you're so hard I bet you don't even feel that knife. You see mom makes me make my own lunch every day for school. Yuck. I guess she's teaching me responsibility.
